Report of first ALN event

We held the first event of the ALN programme on December 14 2005 at the Department for Constitutional Affairs.

The purpose of the event was to introduce people to the idea of action learning networks and how they will operate, to find out what participants wanted, and to start the learning process in groups.

After presentations from Ian Johnson, David Wilcox, Richard Wilson, Diane Warburton and Milica Howell, participants wrote on their badges a few words about their interests in engagement. They then spent 15 minutes networking and finding people with similar interests, and formed three groups. In the groups they reviewed the map of connections among teams and departments in the field, and their location on the map; wrote on post-it notes and a flip chart what they wanted from the event and programme; and then reviewed from experience of engagement what works and what doesn’t.

The groups formed were turning engagement into action; community cohesion; innovation. Over the next few weeks we’ll be using an online system to take the discussion forward, working in groups, and meeting again in January.
