The Engagement Game
As part of the Action Learning Network Drew Mackie and David Wilcox are developing a workshop game that is designed to help people plan engagement processes.
The first run of the game was at an event on February 10, when members of the network tried out a prototype. The first task was to choose a scenario - and they came up with the challenge of promoting healthy eating. This formed the main purpose of the game. After that groups formed around the four stages of engagement - inception, preparation, involvement, delivery/evaluation. Each had a section of the board to work on.
The groups then considered who the main stakeholders would be in that situation, and what methods might be used to engage them. They used pre-prepared cards and post-it notes to fill in sections of their quartile of the board for people and processes.
The aim of having different groups was to simulate what often happens in practice - where different groups may be working on different phases.
During the game groups were able - and did - move from table to table to exchange ideas and make suggestions about each other’s proposals.
After each group had completed their section, we brought all of the quartiles together to reform the game board. We then used experience of the game to start a discussion on the lessons for engagement planning.
