Help in getting started and using the engaging.me.uk system

Initial instructions when joining

Overview

The trampoline system:

  • Provides all users with their own home page with space for a profile, photo, contact details, files and web links. You can see who is involved.
  • Allows you to set up interest groups. These can act as teams discussion and collaboration among users, and channels to broadcast messages. You can develop an online community.
  • Enables you to send messages to inviduals, groups and channels by normal email and from the web site. You don’t have to set up new software or change your working patterns
  • Provides file storage in a resource bank. You and your groups can keep documents in one place.

Main Home page

At the top right you can log out

  • Below that, in the toolbar, you have a link to your home page; a drop down menu to navigate to your groups; a m drop down menu to other sections of the site. These include the various clusters of groups (e.g. ALNs, support, development), and the directory of users. There is also a search facility.
  • The sidebar enables you to create a new group, and provides additional navigation to groups and the directory.

Your home page

You can reach your home page from the link in the toolbar
When on your homepage the new sidebar enable you to manage data

  • your mailbox with all your emails on this system
  • your mail manager to access team and channel memberships
  • the resource bank of email attachments and other files and links

You also have controls for

  • your account setting. Please limit changes to your brief description and email handling (copies or not)
  • Contact details that appear on your home page
  • Password settings - where you can change the one that your were sent
  • the profile and picture that appears on your home page
  • the links and file downloads you display on your home page

Finding other people

To find others on the system

  • go to the People Directory from drop down “Main menu” or the Main Home Page
  • use search for a name or any other word
  • when found, clicking their name takes you to their home page, with contact details (if thye provide them) and a “Post a message” link

Groups

At the start you will have access to some groups, but not others. You can ask to join groups, and also create your own (but please check with host David Wilcox first so we don’t get too many)

  • You get to the groups you are subscribed to by the “My groups” drop down menu. You can find other groups in the “Main menu” drop down.
  • If you want to become a member of a group you have found, click the subscribe link if one shows, or email the c o-ordinator if it is a limited-access group.
  • When you get to the home page of a group of which you are a member, you’ll see who are the members, and your access level
  • The left sidebar has a link to the group mailbox and resource bank. On the right there’s a link to post a message to all members of the group

Email and web

One of the strengths of the system is that you can communicate either through the web site, or email.

  • All messages sent to you on the system will be emailed to your normal email account. Email support@engaging.me.uk if you wish to change the account or add another one - e.g. a home email account. Messages to your address on the system also end up in your mailbox.
  • You can can send messages to the system by normal email: use firstname.lastname@engaging.me.uk for an indivudal, of groupname@engaging.me.uk for a group (you need to use the short group name you’ll find on the group home page.) In the same way, you can simply reply to messages.
